Financial Aid
Two major types of financial aid are available to graduate students: 1) Financial aid based on academic merit and 2) Financial aid based on personal need. The applicant is advised to apply for both types simultaneously in order to avoid delay in consideration for an award. Students awarded such an assistantship stipend also receive full tuition waiver for every term they are granted such aid. In addition to the tuition waiver and stipend, the University provides an opportunity to purchase highly subsidized health insurance under the Graduate Assistant plans.
A student's graduate assistantship is initially awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Art and Art History's Graduate Admissions Committee. Continuance of merit-based assistance is determined on a semester-to-semester basis. Continuance presumes that, during the prior term of the assistantship, the student has proven highly capable in the M.F.A. program of studies, in assigned teaching or gallery assistance, and in departmental service duties. Such continuance requires recommendation by the Graduate Program Coordinator, the student's Graduate Advisory Committee, and a departmental Graduate Faculty Committee.
Applicants who wish to apply for Graduate Assistantship based on academic merit must check the appropriate box on the Graduate School application form.
